Smith & Wesson returns to its roots with the all-new Model 1854 lever-action rifle. That’s right, the company best known for heirloom-quality double-action revolvers and cutting-edge polymer-frame semi-automatic pistols and ARs under the Military & Police banner is now in the lever-gun business.

In a move that harks back to founders Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson’s start with the Volcanic lever-action handgun and rifle a full 170 years ago, two versions of the new rifle will be available at launch. One offers the wet-weather and tactical advantages, respectively, of stainless steel fitted with synthetic stocks and M-LOK slots seamlessly incorporated into the fore-end while a Limited Edition model combines an attractive polished black PVD metal finish with high-grade walnut.

Each boasts a forged steel receiver, a 19.25” threaded barrel and a tubular magazine that offers nine-plus-one capacity in the venerable .44 Rem. Mag. chambering and that is removable from the gun for safe unloading.

Included XS aperture-rear and gold-bead front sights and a Picatinny rail come standard as do a flat trigger and large-loop lever. The receiver and round-body bolt’s dimensions are designed to handle such anticipated future chamberings as .45 Colt, .357 Mag. and .30-30 Win. and, in a larger version, .45-70 Gov’t. and perhaps even .460 S&W Mag. and .500 S&W Mag

The family is also expected to eventually include rimfire chamberings. Early samples we were able to wring out on a Tennessee hog hunt exhibited graceful lines, smooth operation and tasteful integration of the various modern features.
