Revisiting the Steyr AUG

One of the most recognizable rifles in the world is the iconic bullpup-style Steyr AUG. It’s been around for a long time, and is still going strong today as the Steyr AUG A3 M1, a semi-automatic rifle platform with an adjustable short-stroke, gas-piston operation. It’s chambered for 5.56x45mm with 10, 30, or 42 round capacity magazines.

The new M1 is the first bullpup variant of the venerated AUG A3 platform. It’s multi-configurable, allowing you to configure it for virtually any type of mission.

Steyr equipped the AUG A3 M1 with a proprietary optics mounting platform, which uses the standard Picatinny rail. The AUG A3 M1 will come equipped with an extended rail, and it is optionally available with a short rail, a high rail, 1.5x or 3x optics. (Sold separately.)

The AUG A3 M1 Optics version comes with the upgraded optic tube, which features exceptionally bright and clear optics. They modernized the scope tube with the addition of three Picatinny rail sections to accommodate accessories like a close-quarters holographic sight.

The High-Rail version has 16 numbered slots, which is the widest range of optic choices. And the 11-slot Short-Rail version is designed for use with a reflex sight or a longer eye relief.

The rail and optics platform on the AUG A3 are interchangeable among the three versions by using the base screws that thread up through the tops of the receivers.

The AUG A3 M1 boasts an overall length of just 28.15 inches, and along with a 16 inch heavy barrel, it’s about eight inches shorter than an M4 carbine with a similar length of barrel.

Compared to traditional direct impingement gas operated weapons, the Steyr AUG runs cleaner because of the short-stroke gas-piston operation. They vent exhaust gas out the front of the weapon, rather than the back of the receiver.

The AUG has a matched pair of guide rods that slide inside the bolt-carrier assembly for flawless reliability and a smooth operating action.

The Dual adjustable gas system ensures reliable operation even under the harshest conditions. It works great with dirty ammo and in adverse conditions.

With its improved ergonomics, faster firing rate and easy conversion to left-hand operation, the AUG A3 M1 is the pinnacle of modern rifle design.

It has a quick change barrel, a collapsible forward grip, and a two-position cross-bolt safety that locks the trigger. Left-handed shooters will benefit from the optional left-handed conversion option, making this a versatile ambidextrous weapons system.

Steyr also updated the receiver with a VLTOR Quick-Disconnect Sling Swivel, which makes attachment and removal very easy, even for single-point slings.

The M1 AUG is available in four different colors: Black, Green, Mud, and White. The rifle is available in both a NATO version that accepts the standard STANAG (AR) magazine and a variant that accepts genuine Steyr AUG magazines.
